More About Paper Mache:
Paper mache (Papier mache) is called kari munaqqash or painted work. It is also called kari qalamdani or pen-case work, because it was commonly used to ornament pen-cases and small boxes. A characteristic feature of Kashmiri handicrafts is the free exchange of designs and motifs across various craft forms. Designs from woodcarvings are painted on objects as paper-mache designs. Similarly, designs from shawls and carpets are also emulated on papier mache craft items. The names of the motifs retain their relationship with the object of their inspiration and become known through them. (Source: Sahapedia)
It requires a long time to try and become familiar with the essentials of the specialty. From transforming paper into mash, and making them into lavishly beautified, brilliant relics like containers, bowls or cups, papier-mache makers can spend quite a long while before they can create more intricate items, for example, elephants, tapestries, adornments boxes, trimmings or bangles. Through this, the craftsmanship portrays the way of life and history of Kashmir.
The studios of papier-mache are for the most part situated in the blocked areas of old Srinagar. In any case, throughout the long term, many these studios have closed down as individuals changed to better-paid positions. Know more about the life of Paper Mache artisans here
